Brooke C. Obie, JD, MFA, is an award-winning author, journalist and screenwriter named to The Root 100 Most Influential African Americans of 2019. Her debut novel, Book of Addis: Cradled Embers won the 2018 Accra International Book Festival Independent Writer’s Award, the 2017 Phillis Wheatley Book Award for First Fiction and the 2017 and the 2017 Black Caucus of the American Library Association for self-published fiction. In 2020, her TV pilot screenplay adaptation of Book of Addis became a quarterfinalist for the Screencraft TV Pilot Screenplay Competition. Her thesis for The New School’s MFA in Fiction program, which became Book of Addis, was a finalist for the Fulbright Fellowship. Brooke’s attended a writing workshop with Columbia University in Paris, France and the Callaloo Journal of African Diaspora Arts & Letters Creative Writing Workshop at Oxford University where she began work on the sequel, Book of Addis: Burning Plains.

In 7th grade she wrote--what is now considered fan-fiction--story based on her disappointment of the ending to Streets of Fire. When she later watched Romancing the Stone, she finally knew what she wanted to be when she grew up--a Romance Writer!

Rhonda Sekhmet Ra is a poet and spoken word artist from Wilmington, North Carolina, whose work focuses on truth, justice, empowerment, and freedom for people of African descent. She began writing poetry as a child and started sharing her spoken word at open mics in Miami in 2014, with her first featured performance in 2015. Since then, she has performed across the East Coast, and in August 2023, released her first spoken word album, "The Awakening," featuring 11 tracks that reflect her journey through racial consciousness.

In addition to performing, Rhonda has facilitated poetry writing workshops for nearly four years, including her virtual workshop, "Let Your Soul Write." Through this, she helps participants remove creative barriers and use poetry for expression and healing, drawing on her background in mental health. Her work continues to inspire and empower people of African descent through dynamic spoken word performances.
